Finding out that you are pregnant can be one of the most exciting moments in your life. But it can also be nerve-wracking. With so much information available online and family and friends who seem to all have different advice it can get to be overwhelming.

Some questions which you may be wondering about include:

  • How many probiotics should I take?
  • Do I need to take them or does my baby also need them?
  • What are the odds that I will get gestational diabetes?
  • Does being pregnant mean I can no longer eat sweets?
  • When should I start eating a prenatal vitamin?
  • What is morning sickness?
  • What can I do to help prevent morning sickness?

Nutrition for your pregnancy

Koble expert Dr. von Hagen, Naturopathic Doctor, walks through everything you need to know about nutrition for your pregnancy. This series covers everything you need to know about prenatal vitamins, probiotics, morning sickness, and preventing gestational diabetes.

1 — Prenatal Vitamins

One of the most important recommendations from Dr. von Hagen is to choose a prenatal vitamin based on your personal preference. There is no need to break the bank when it comes to picking a vitamin. As long as you’re getting the necessary amount of folic acid, vitamin D, iron, and calcium based on your body, it’s the perfect vitamin for you. If vitamins aren’t something that you feel comfortable taking, there are plenty of natural sources that you can get the same nutrition from.

2- Managing morning sickness

Let’s talk about morning sickness. Did you know that 70-80% of women will experience morning sickness during their pregnancy? Dr. von Hagen recommends eating a light, carb filled snack as soon as you wake up and to eat protein rich snacks throughout the day to maintain your energy levels even if you’re feeling nauseous all the time. Listen to the session here, to learn more about what to eat, which foods to avoid, and supplement options that you can take advantage of.

3 - Probiotics for mom and baby

You may also be wondering about probiotics; do you need them? And will your baby need them? Based on research, both of those answers are entirely up to you, and it’s important to do what’s most feasible for your family. In this session, Dr. von Hagen breaks down this question, the pros and cons of both choices as well as advice based on the Canadian Paediatric Society guidelines.

4- Managing gestational diabetes

We will round off this topic with a session on managing gestational diabetes. It is important to know that gestational diabetes is completely normal, and 1 in every 10 pregnant women will experience it. Thankfully, it does not mean that you need to give up sugar for life, nor does it mean that you will have diabetes for the rest of your life. Dr. von Hagen shares her insight into why gestational diabetes happens (genetics plays a huge role!) and some practical tips on how diet and regular exercise can be used to manage this type of diabetes.
